Guest Post: Easy Ways to Switch to a More Natural Lifestyle!

Disclosure: This is a guest post meaning I am not nor do I claim to be the original author of the article.

Easy Ways to Switch to a More Natural Lifestyle
By: Maurine Anderson

There are many benefits to be had by living a more natural lifestyle, which must be why more and more consumers these days are making the switch to purchasing more natural products and foods on a regular basis. Switching to a more natural lifestyle can make you feel better, strengthen your overall health, and oftentimes even save you money. If you’re interested in making the switch, here is your guide to switching over to a more natural lifestyle—covering everything from hygiene, beauty and diet to clothing and household cleaning. This list of tips is by no means comprehensive, but it does include essential tips that just about anyone can easily incorporate into their current lifestyle.

Hygiene

What have you been using in terms of soap, lotion, shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant in your bathroom? If you purchase these items at your local grocery store, chances are that the products you’re using aren’t all 100 percent natural. Here are some techniques you can use to make the switch to natural toiletries.

Make your own products.

You can make just about any hygiene product at home with even just a few base ingredients. Here are some simple examples of how people make their own natural hygiene products at home (or use pure natural substances in the place of commercial products).

  • Soap. Switch to raw African black soap, or use diluted castile soap.
  • Lotion. Switch to an organic oil like argan oil or coconut oil.
  • Shampoo. Try the “no poo” method, which involves using a baking soda paste for “shampoo” and diluted vinegar for “conditioner”; or try making your own concoction at home using ingredients like coconut milk, castile soap, apple cider vinegar, honey, and jojoba oil. You’ll find a great many DIY recipes online to try (just make sure it’s pH balanced!)
  • Toothpaste. Try out an online DIY recipe that uses a few simple ingredients like baking soda, mineral salt, coconut oil, and essential oil, as this article outlines.
  • Deodorant. Try out an online DIY recipe that features a few simple ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, baking soda, arrowroot powder, and essential oil. Keep in mind here that you likely won’t find many antiperspirant recipes here, as many natural lifestyle enthusiasts shy away from using aluminum chlorohydrate (the substance in antiperspirants that keeps you from sweating).

Visit the natural beauty section of your local big box store.

Don’t want to spend the extra time and effort in making your own hygiene products? The good news is that many big box stores and grocery stores these days are adding natural beauty and cosmetics aisles, stocked with all kinds of natural products. This makes switching to natural hygiene easier than ever, and you’ll find anything from natural soap, shampoo, and acne wash to toothpaste, lotion, and deodorant in these aisles. And if that doesn’t satisfy you enough, pay a visit to a local natural foods store like whole foods and head to their beauty and health section.

Beauty
As with hygienic products, you can find natural cosmetics in the natural beauty aisles of your local grocery store, or at a local natural foods store. And then, of course, you can try making your own natural cosmetics as well. Here are some of the most popular methods for making natural cosmetics at home.

  • Powder foundation. Create a simple mixture of arrowroot powder and green clay (optional), adding cocoa powder for color. Apply with a foundation brush.
  • Eye shadow. Create your own eyeshadow using arrowroot powder and shea butter as your base, then adding ingredients like cocoa powder, nutmeg, beet powder, and turmeric for your preferred color.
  • Eye liner. Create a small jar of gel liner (for use with an angled brush) using activated charcoal and a few drops of distilled water. (Some recipes use additional ingredients like beeswax and coconut oil.)
  • Mascara. Use a thoroughly rinsed and cleaned mascara tube and brush as your container, and add a homemade mixture of ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and activated charcoal.
  • Blush. Make powdered blush by combining arrowroot powder, beet root powder, and cocoa powder to create your preferred color.
  • Lip color. Combine shea butter, beeswax, and beet root powder to create a rich red lip balm.
  • Perfume. Add your favorite essential oils to the carrier oil of your choice (such as fractionated coconut oil or almond oil).

Food

In truth, an entire book could be written on the subject of eating naturally alone. (In fact, there are undoubtedly hundreds of books already written on this subject.) But if you’re new to the realm of natural eating and are looking for a few simple ways that you can make your diet more natural, here are a few tips:

  • Work with fresh ingredients and produce instead of buying prepackaged foods. For example, if you want roasted potatoes, buy fresh potatoes, olive oil, and rosemary instead of bagged frozen roasted potatoes.
  • Make it a habit to shop at your local farmer's market for fresh vegetables and produce.
  • Remember that not everything that comes in a bag, box, or can is bad for you. Frozen fruit and vegetables, for example, are still highly nutritious, and you can use boxed whole wheat pasta to make homemade mac and cheese.
  • Remember that the word “natural” isn’t regulated by the FDA, so you shouldn’t make your purchasing decisions around finding the word “natural” on food labels.
  • Make sure your food is sourced from safe farming practices, like the ones discussed here.
  • Drink plenty of water. As this article explains, it has more benefits than you might think, and it is an easy substitute for processed, sugary drinks. (If you’re missing the taste of fruit in your drinks, try making fruit infused water instead.)
  • Consider taking up canning. This allows you to enjoy your favorite fruits and vegetables all year round.

Clothing

Really the key to finding more natural clothing for you to wear is to know what to search for. When shopping online, for example, you’ll want to use search terms like “organic,” “non-toxic,” and “natural fiber.” Natural clothing is free of synthetic fabrics (anything other than cotton, linen, wool, silk, cashmere, or hemp) and of chemical dyes.

Household Cleaning
As for household cleaning, fortunately more and more grocery stores are stocking their shelves with natural cleaning products. Even still, it’s actually very easy to make your own cleaning products at home using household staples. For example, a simple all-purpose natural cleaner can be made by combining distilled white vinegar, water, and a few drops of your favorite essential oils in a spray bottle. The web is filled with natural household cleaning product “recipes” for you to try.

Beryl of Monkeys - 100% Organic Indian Cotton Pajamas Review

Beryl of Monkeys
Disclosure: I received this product in exchange for my honest review. All opinions and experiences are my own and may differ from yours.

Beryl of Monkeys
Beryl of Monkeys was created in honor of 'Nana' Beryl Orton who loved children dearly. Portions of each pajama purchase is donated to CRY - Child Rights & You. Beryl of Monkeys pajamas are made from 100% pure organic Indian cotton which is grown on fertile Indian soil and hand-picked.

Cotton Toddler Pajamas

MatteoStefano

We received a pair of Matteo ($45ARV) and a pair of Strefano ($45ARV) pajamas from Beryl of Monkeys. These pajamas are made of 100% Pure Organic Indian Cotton. They are printed with non-toxic dyes in unisex prints and colors. The pajamas are made of breathable high quality material making them safe, strong, soft and resilient pajamas. They are also hypoallergenic and no harmful chemicals are involved in the manufacturing of the garments making them perfect for even the little with the super sensitive skin.

I love these 100% Pure Organic Indian Cotton pajamas, they are adorable and just as soft as Beryl of Monkeys claims they are! I want a pair for myself! Usually I struggle to get pajamas on the boys after their bathes because the polyester of most pajamas just doesn't glide nicely over damp skin. These are so easy to get on and they don't suction to their skin. I can only imagine how comfortable these pajamas must be.

The boys sure did have fun modeling these pajamas for me.

I guess you could say that they are just demonstrating how comfortable the pajamas are and how easy it is to move around in them. They were dancing, twirling, jumping, etc. I think that's a sure sign that they like their Beryl of Monkey pajamas and approve of them.

Ezio usually doesn't want to wear anything to bed, but he has always left his Beryl of Monkey pajamas on. Cade on the other hand absolutely loves pajamas! After he wears these pjs he always asks the very next day if I've washed them yet. He loves soft and warm pjs.

Sassy Pants Handmade Diapers Review & Discount Code!

Sassy Pants Diapers
Disclosure: I received the following items in exchange for my honest review. All opinions and experiences are my own and may differ from those of your own.

Sassy Pants Handmade
Sassy Pants Handmade was created by a wonderful SAHM named Stephanie. As a young girl her mom taught her how to sew. She's been a mom for three years now and two littles that she has diapered. She was looking to save money and reduce her carbon foot print as she began her journey of motherhood. She started to make her own cloth diapers in 2012, at first she sewed with polyester/synthetic fabrics as well as the much dreaded microfiber and waterproof fabrics. She learned, as many of us other cloth diapering mommas have, what the fibers in these materials were and how they are manufactured as well as the effects they have on the environment and their inability to break down in landfills. Making them not much different then just using disposables. She decided to no longer sew with these fabrics and started to sew with wool and organic fabrics, which she has been doing since 2013.

Sassy Pants Hybrid Fitted & Regular Fitted

We received two cloth diapers from Sassy Pants Handmade, the Fox print is a regular fitted ($26ARV)  and the Mustaches is a hybrid fitted ($34ARV). Both fitteds come with a double length soaker as well as a regular length soaker. The soakers are made of heavy organic bamboo fleece and hemp fleece, they are dreamy soft and perfect for touching baby's sensitive skin. This is a perfect combination for soakers as the bamboo quickly absorbs while the hemp slowly absorbs and holds a lot of liquid. The hybrid fitted shell is made of the outer layer which has the print or embroider design, a hidden layer of polyester fleece and then an inside soft layer of organic bamboo fleece. The regular fitted is made of the same outer layer with the print or embroider design and two layers of organic bamboo fleece.

The soakers do not snap in, making it perfect for customizing how they are laid in the diaper. If you have a girl, you'll want most of your absorbency in the middle, so you could fold the regular soaker in half and lay it in the middle. If you have a boy you'll want the majority of your absorbency in the front of the diaper, you could fold the regular soaker and place it more towards the front. Personally, I just lay them both flat to cover the length of the diaper shell and they have worked perfectly fine for us.

Above on the right I have the fold down rise (FDR) folded down and I have the wing snapped to the extra snap for a smaller fit. And on the right the FDR is open so the diaper is at it's normal unstretched length and the wing is snapped to the regular snaps.

Sassy Pants diapers are one size, they fit from approximately 10 to 35 pounds. They have a fold down rise to give a good fit for all size babies and toddlers. The wings are also "equipped"  with an additional snap to help obtain a better fit with smaller babies.

I didn't have a single problem with getting the perfect fit with this diaper! The back elastic is just tight enough to give a snug fit in the back to help keep in any messy messes, while not being too tight - no red marks. The leg elastics are perfect as well, tight enough to keep the soakers in the diaper and they wont allow those messy messes to escape from the legs either. As you can see in both photos, the rise of the diaper is generous, which I think is awesome! Ezio is 3 years old and not quite into the whole potty training thing, boys are definitely more difficult then girls! Anyhow, he is about 32lbs and about 3'4" tall. I could definitely use the FDR on these diapers and still have a secure and full coverage fit. He's only three pounds away from the approximate weight range, but has plenty of room to grow in Sassy Pant Diapers! Huge plus for me! I also really love that the diapers are not bulky at all, even with both the double length and regular length soakers in the diaper.

The absorbency on both diapers are the same, but as stated one is a hybrid fitted with a hidden layer of polyester fleece for a water resistant layer. Not a waterproof layer. What the poly fleece does is, it creates a barrier that stops the liquid from soaking out toward the print/outer most fabric to help maintain a dry outer layer, the liquid is then absorbed by the soaker or the inner lining. With the regular fitted you do not have this water resistant layer, however in a sense you have an added absorbency layer as the hidden layer on those fitteds is heavy organic bamboo fleece which is very absorbent. Ezio has worn these diapers a few times now and I feel it safe to say that they are both very absorbent and while it is hotter now that we're in June and we finally have hot summer weather, he is drinking more and both diapers have allowed for up to 4 hours of drinking and wetting! I will try them both at bedtime and see how they hold, I bet they will do fairly well as he wont be drinking water every ten minutes through out the night. I'll update with how our over nights go with our Sassy Pants Diapers.

I am a try lover of fitted diapers, especially WAHM made fitteds. These fitteds did not disappoint, that is a tried and true fact!

PetGiftBox April Cat Box Review & Discount Code!

Disclosure: I received the below products in exchange for my honest review! All opinions and experiences are m own and may differ from those of your own.

PetGiftBox.com Cat Subscription Box!
PetGiftBox is a monthly subscription based program for your furry friends. With boxes for cats or dogs, both subscriptions help you spoil your pet with delicious treats and fun toys. There may even be something inside for their human friend.

April PetGiftBox
The April PetGiftBox ($17.99ARV/month) was our first and Buddy (9 month old kitten) was the first to catch a wiff of the mysteries inside. As soon as it entered the house he attacked me in a friendly, "Mom can I have it please!" sort of manor. Now, we had just gotten home with lunch. The PetGiftBox was on the front porch waiting for us and without thinking, I brought it in the house. Needless to say, I wasn't able to finish my lunch, Buddy made sure of that!

He sniffed the box, rubbed on the box and scratched at it.Oh and rolled around, see the short video below.

The package is addressed and shipped to your furry friend(s) and the inside label is addressed to them as well! April 22nd was Earth Day, so for the April PetGiftBox they took an Earth friendly approach for the packaging and products.

TOYS!!
My furry babies received some awesome toys and tasty snacks!

I barely got the box open and Buddy snatched the Wooly Fun Feather Ball ($7.97ARV) right out of the box! It was still attached to the cardboard backing, but he didn't seem to mind. The Wooly Fun Feather Ball is handmade in Nepal by artisans. It is made chemical-free through the whole process and is filled with organic catnip.

The other toy we received that they also love is Shelby the Hemp Mouse ($6.99ARV), the little orange toy by Buddy's tail in the above photo! The cat nip was definitely strong and apparently much more appealing to not only Buddy, but also Sunshine (1.5 year old) who was soon fighting with Buddy for the mouse toy. After the boys had their fun with the toy then Chippie Cookie (momma kitty), who was still pregnant at the time had her fun with it and was not going to give it back, she was even growling (yes, cats do growl). Shelby the Hemp Mouse is made of hemp fabric and is filled with organic catnip. All three of the cats play with this one as well. Every time I see either of these toys they are either being thrown in the air by one of the cats or in a different part of the house. They approve of both toys!

Treats!

Pet Greens Deep Sea Tune Semi Moist Cat Treats ($4.89ARV) are tasty bite sized treats that contain real fish as it's first ingredient and is free of artificial flavors, colors, wheat gluten and soy. All three cats love their new Green treats! Perfect little bite sized morsels!

We also received Pet Greens Self Grow Garden ($4.49ARV), which is a pouch that grows organic greens in it's self! It is 100% certified organic wheat grass seed and soil mixture in a ready-to-grow bag. The seeds begin to grow within seven to ten days and is a delicious snack to satisfy your pets greens craving. Even reptiles can enjoy the Pet Greens Self Grow Garden! I can't seem to find my photos of this, but once I find the images, I will be sure to update this post.

Cleaning Supply

Lastly our box also contained Absolutely Clean Pet Stain & Odor Remover & More! ($3.99ARV). this removes pet stains and odors safely and effectively without any chemicals or toxins. It is made in the USA and made with all natural, plant-based ingredients. Absolutely Clean is safe for use on Carpet & Upholstery for cleaning up pet and pet food stains as well as urine odors. It's rather simple to use and can be used several different ways, directions are on the back and give eight different ways to clean up different stains and odors. We all love our pets, but sometimes they can leave us with dirty or stinky messes that aren't easily cleaned up with your average household cleaners.

Is PetGiftBox Saving you Money on these products?!

Earth Day Tips from PetGiftbox
On the informational card that they include in their boxes about the products in which you receive they listed some simple ways to celebrate Earth Day! Here are a few, Recycle your pet food cans and buy the largest size for the best value and less waste. Even if your pet wont/can't eat the whole can at once, you can almost always refrigerate the extra and feed it to them at a later time or date. A great one, especially in my neighborhood with all of the dog owners is to use biodegradable poop bags and for us cat owners, use non-clay cat liter. If you're really committed, they even recommend you compost your pets waste! What are some other ways you practice being green when it comes to your pets?

Prior to receiving your box, you will receive an email letting you know that your box is on it's way. This way you can log into your account and either put a hold on it if you're going to be out of town or don't want the delivery for that day/week or to also substitute certain items for things you may like better. The website and your account are both very simple to use.

So you wont get stuck with a box that you really wanted to cancel or whatnot.

You can also create meal plans on the Door to Door Organics website with their products.

Ezio loves when our fruit drawer is full! I'm surprised he hasn't turned into an orange yet.

And... not so fond of the veggies that were nearly over flowing in our veggie drawer. He's not a big fan of many veggies, which we're working on and since receiving these Door to Door Organics boxes with a larger variety of veggies in them, I have been able to get him to try some new and different veggies.

We received these delicious organic produce in our first box:

Ezio took great pride in helping me unbox all three boxes, including our second box which we have an unboxing video of! You can view that right down below.

We received a Red Bell Pepper in every box we received and Ezio insisted that every one of those peppers was actually an apple. So I let him have at it and while he did attempt to bite into the pepper he did not eat it as I had sort of hoped. I guess once he broke through the skin of the pepper he realized it tasted different. However, he still calls them apples. It's rather cute.

A medium mixed produce box lasts us not quite a full week! All of the kids as well as myself mow down on fruit and veggies more so then we have ever done with candy! Unless it's chocolate. Everyone LOVES apples and I managed to get my picky eater, Cade, to try a pear by cutting them both up and sort of mixing them together. He didn't think that was very clever of me, took one bite and immediately knew it was not an apple, after that he knew which slices were apples and which were pears. "Breaks the game", as my grandfather used to say. Ezio and Jada on the other hand will eat apples and pears like they were the last food on the Earth. Jada eats much more veggies then the boys which is awesome! She has always loved salad and typically will eat a salad before a "meal" or other sorts.

Jada and I had a delicious Spaghetti Dinner with Red Leaf Lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and of course bacon. We also had a side of cucumbers, cause well, we just love cucumbers. Jada mostly ate her salad and cucumbers of course.

Blood Orange!

Honestly, I don't ever remember having had a blood orange growing up so this was a first for me as well as Ezio (my little orange boy). I was quite nervous that he wouldn't eat it due to it's dark purple color, but after a quick ew, he tried it and loves them!

Ezio ate all of the blood oranges and also "scared" his sister with the "Ew!". Jada thought the orange was rotten and that's why it was a purple color, she refused to try it.

All of the fruits and veggies we received in our three boxes were delicious and of great quality. Some of the leafy veggies did have tiny little red bugs on them, but they are normal and due to not having harsh chemical pesticides sprayed on the produce.  They washed off rather easy and you couldn't even tell they were there. We did not receive any rotten or molding produce and my favorite part is that we didn't bring any fruit flies into the house! EVERY time we go to our traditional grocery store for produce we typically end up bringing home fruit flies.... and it's impossible to get rid of them with how much fruit and veggies we have in the house at any given time. We had no issues at all! Making a huge plus for DTDO from my point of view.
