FARE: Teal Pumpkin Project - A Safe & Fun Halloween for ALL!

The Teal Pumpkin Project

The Teal Pumpkin Project was started last year (2014) by FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education). This project is not only to help promote awareness of food allergies, but also to give children with food allergies a safe experience and to allow them to trick or treat and not need to be excluded. The Teal Pumpkin Project is a nationwide movement and you do not have to have a child with food allergies in order to take the pledge or participate with a teal pumpkin and safe treats/surprises for children managing food allergies or those that are not allowed candy. Visit FARE for more information.

Why is This Important to Us?

As many of you know, my youngest monkey - Ezio (3yo) has several food allergies, a couple of which are fairly severe. Halloween is my favorite time of year! I love trick or treating with the kids and seeing all of the different costumes. However, this is also a very stressful time for us as Ezio is allergic to egg (which is in many American chocolate candies), peanut, tree nut, coconut (coconut oil is an ingredient in many candies and snacks as well), sesame, etc. He can for sure have Twizzler, Gimbal's Fine Candies and a few other

candies that do not have chocolate. Almost all chocolate candies are off limits for him because they either have egg in the chocolate or they may be cross contaminated with peanut and/or tree nuts. While no, at three years old he doesn't need chocolate or any candy really, it's not fair to him to watch his older two siblings enjoying Halloween, plus it's only once a year. Due to our experience with this and maybe even if one of my kiddos didn't have food allergies we would probably still participate in this wonderful project as my mom worked for an Allergy & Asthma specialist doctor for about 12 years. So growing up, I had learned quite a bit about allergies whether they be seasonal, environmental or food allergies.

 Take the Pledge!

Join my family and take the Teal Pumpkin Project Pledge for a healthier and safer Halloween for ALL! Having little  toys instead of just candy can even save you quite a bit of money. We have a busy neighborhood full of children and they also come in car loads from surrounding neighborhoods. You can go to the dollar store and get little toys like army men, yo-yo's and so much more! We spent about $50-70 on candy last year to be passed out at our house! That's how many children come through here. There is also still time to make little goodie bags with a few small toys and maybe even some Gimbal's Fine Candies which are allergy safe.

Join me! Take the Pledge!

Little Passports Easy 4-Step Halloween Craft for Kids!

Have your little Explorers been running around in their costumes since Oct 1? If it is like my house, they haven't worn anything else! It is fun to see their creativity come to life. Sometimes, however, it is hard to keep up with all their creativity and endless costume changes!

That is why I love this week's Little Passports blog Post, Easy 4-step Halloween Craft. It is an easy Halloween craft sure to delight your darlings in disguise!

We are going to try this on some onesies for my niece on the way. She won't be here until Christmas so our themes will be different.

Gimbal's Fine Candies: Allergy Friendly Candies!

Disclosure: I received the below product(s) in exchange for my honest review. All opinions and experiences are our own and may differ from your own views.

Gimbal's Fine Candies!

Gimbal's Fine Candies was founded in 1989 by Alexander Gimbal, the first Gimbal Candy Kitchen was in downtown San Francisco. Four generations later and the passion for making delectable treats still remains at Gimbal's Fine Candies. Gimbal's motto is "Making Gourmet Candies for Everyone Everyday". They make candies from old-time favorites to fun and innovative new candies, everything created by Gimbal is made with pride, her in the USA.

 Allergy Friendly Candies!

Gimbal's candies are allergy friendly, they are 100% free of peanut, tree nut, gluten, dairy, soy and egg. These ingredients are responsible for countless allergic reactions across the nation. We love Gimbal's since they are safe for Ezio. He is allergic to tree nuts, peanut, egg, coconut, sesame, cinnamon, and a few others so we are very thankful for companies who take allergies into consideration when creating their products.

Our Review of Gimbal's Fine Candies

We received three bags of Gimbal's Fine Candies; Gourmet Jelly Beans, Sour Gourmet Jelly Beans and Sour Lovers (heart shaped).

The Gourmet Jelly Beans have 41 flavors! These were created in an exquisite array of colors and are packed with antioxidant Vitamin C and burst with real juice and intense flavor from the delicate shell to the chewy center. These Gourmet Jelly Beans are available a 3 oz or 14 oz package as well as a 40 oz jar. With these tasty 41 flavors you can try various combinations or "recipes" for a gathered taste. Here are a few examples, but check out the Recipes at Gimbal's.

Want to try four jelly beans that will taste like a Pomegranate Cosmo?

I think the Frosted Cupcake would be my favorite!

Let me know in the comments below which Gourmet Jelly Bean Recipe you'd like to try or a single flavor jelly bean.

The Sour Gourmet Jelly Beans offer a mouthwatering sour fruit flavor that will leaving you wanting another handful. These jelly beans come in a mixture of 12 juicy and incredibly scrumptious flavors. These are also a good source of antioxidant Vitamin C.

Which deliciously sour flavor would you like to try of the Sour Gourmet Jelly Beans? I ALWAYS have loved Sour Apple!

The Sour Lovers are like soft and chewy (no hard outer layer), sugary and sour all in one. They will make you pucker! The Sour Lovers come in 12 brand new, pucker-up, mouth-watering flavors! Including; Meyer Lemon and Pomegranate to Mango, Bing Cherry and Strawberry Daiquiri. Sour Lovers has revolutionized sour candy forever. These of course are also high in antioxidants Vitamin C.

I ate quite a few of theGourmet Jelly Beans and I didn't come across any bad or gross tasting ones and I assume the children loved all of the flavors as well since I didn't find any spit out. Even Cade who is very picky loved these jelly beans! Since finishing this bag, Cade has asked me to get more. Ezio also loves them a ton, plus they are one of few safe snacks that I can give to Ezio.

The Sour Gourmet Jelly Beans were also delicious and that was the first bag to be emptied by our family. Cade really likes sour candies.  I have longed for a sour candy and while all of them did not make me pucker a few caught me totally off guard and I may have even made a funny face. The Sour Lovers were definitely great.

Halloween Treats

For Halloween this year I will be purchasing some more Gimbal's Fine Candies. There is a Teal Pumpkin Project, we will have a Teal Pumpkin proudly displayed for the other families with allergies to know that we are a safe place for them to get candy or other treats. I am planning on bagging up some of Gimbal's candies in Halloween themed baggies and passing those out to children with food allergies (if requested by their parent or themselves).

These would also make for a great treat to send to school with your child if someone in their class has a food allergy. Ezio is not yet in school, but I hope next year when he starts that he wont have to be completely excluded from parties and such due to his list of allergens. This is the main reason I am striving to send safe treats and snacks for all students.
