Sam and Sofia love joining their Colombian friends to participate in this tradition—they are always looking for their next adventure!


 
Greece
Sam and Sofia join their friends in Greece to celebrate New Year's and St. Basil’s Day on January 1st. The Greeks start the year off with a fun-filled day of food, festivities, as well as time with family and friends. One favorite way to celebrate is eating the Vasilopita or St Basil's cake, which is similar to a pound cake and is baked with a silver or gold coin inside. Whoever finds the coin in their slice of cake will have a very lucky year!

Japan
When it’s cold outside, you might want to slurp down a giant bowl of steaming-hot noodles! But for the new year, not just any bowl of noodles will do. Making the best of a road trip with Little Passports Travel Tips

“Are we there yet?” was a term coined by the family road trip! While new technology and toys may have silenced backseat conversations, spending time together in the car can still be a great opportunity for family bonding and learning. Even if you plan on bringing the latest gadget to pass the time, try saving them for the end of your trip when everyone is tired and cranky!

Here are some ideas from Little Passports that are sure to make the time fly by (or at least go by a little faster):

1. Save your most recent Little Passports delivery from Sam and Sofia for your road trip so your kids to learn and explore during the car ride.

2. Say goodbye to your trusted GPS! Bring back the memory of car trips as a kid and use a map! The night before your trip bring out an actual map (if you can find one!) to show your intended route to your child. Even better, copy the map and pull out a highlighter so your child can follow along – and let you know when you missed a turn.

3. Build in time for pit stops – and if time allows, make short stops that incorporate fun activities along the way. Everyone will need a bathroom break and a meal, but if that happens at a place right off the highway and near playground it can be better for everyone! The kids will get fed – and burn off some energy.

4. Hit up a dollar store before you leave and stock up on small toys and activities to give to your kids along the way. Every hour let your child choose a surprise – a great incentive for good behavior! You can even wrap the toys for an added element of excitement.

2013 Rugby Championship – Teach your kids something new today!

Have you ever heard of a game called rugby? It’s a really fun sport, especially if you’ve seen a game being played. The rules are similar to games that are familiar to you (such as soccer or football). Two teams, with 15 players each, try to earn points by getting a ball across the opponent’s goal line or between their goalposts. However, in rugby, you can only throw the ball backwards!

Rugby is popular in countries such as Australia, England, Italy and Argentina. It’s watched by over 2 billion people worldwide, especially during world championships. Sam and Sofia, of Little Passports, have been watching the 2013 Rugby Championships and wanted to share some fun facts they have learned. There are many different rugby competitions each year- so don’t get confused! The Rugby Championship is an annual contest between the best rugby teams in the southern hemisphere – including Argentina, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand! Little Passports is here to help you learn more about these countries.

Argentina
• The Argentinian national rugby team is nicknamed Los Pumas, and their emblem features a jaguar. It is the first year they have been included in this Championship.
• Argentina is the second largest country in South America.
• Argentina’s version of the tooth fairy is a small rat called “El Ratón Perez.”

Australia
• The Australian rugby team is named after the Wallaby, an animal that looks very similar to the Kangaroo.
• Scientists are closely watching a volcano called Big Ben. They believe it may be the next Australian volcano to erupt! The last volcanic eruption in Australia was over 5000 years ago at Mt. Gambier.
• The warmest months in Australia happen when we are having winter in the United States. This is because Australia is below the equator.

South Africa
• The South African rugby team is named the Springboks, which is also a small antelope found in West Africa.
• South Africa has 3 capital cities: Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein.
• South Africa has 11 official languages, including Zulu, Afrikaans, Xhosa and English.

New Zealand
• New Zealand won the Rugby Championship last year in 2012. They are in the final match this year too!
• This country is over 100,000 square miles, roughly the size of Colorado.
• One of New Zealand’s popular animals is the kiwi bird, in part because it is native only to this country.

Take a Trip Around the World with Lunches and Little Passport!

All around the world children are preparing to return to school which means homework, new friends and lunch? Yes, that is right! Let's take a trip around the world and visit different countries to see what yummy foods the school kids are eating every day!

France


 In France, children are enjoying 3 or 4 course meals that are made from high-quality ingredients and are mostly made from scratch. French children all sit in the same eating area, the cafeteria. With an interesting fact that there are no vending machines in French schools because they are banned due to the high sugar and fat content that those vending machine treats carry. Typical school lunches here have a variety of dishes and ingredients, such as grilled fish, salad, red beans, seasonal vegetables, garlic sausage, fruit salads and chocolate flan, but those are just to name a few. Another perk to school lunches in France is that they are served on plates and eaten with real silverware!

Japan
 

In Japan, school lunch ingredients are locally sourced and almost never frozen, in addition the schools employ nutrition experts that work with kids and teach them the importance of good eating habits. Japanese kids eat in a community, just like kids in France. What does eating in a community mean? They sit with their peers and even their teachers during lunch. The children in Japan wear white hats and robes to serve their classmates, which teaches them teamwork and respect. You can definitely expect to find lots of rice, vegetables, fish, soup and meat on the plate. 

South Africa
 

South African school meals include natural ingredients such as corn, squash, sweet potatoes and yams. Their meals also include rice, soft porridge and meat that is sprinkled in with the vegetables. They enjoy a special stew which is called potjiekos, which is named after potjie, a three-legged pot. This stew originated from Dutch settlers. The cook puts vegetables, meat, potatoes and spices into the potjie, which is then heated by small amounts of wood and twigs. 

Columbia

School lunch in Colombia includes ingredients that usually vary from region to region, but can contain rice, potatoes, fruit, beans, meatball and vegetables such as corn and avocados. They also have a special vegetarian menu available and children from the ages of 2 to 5 years old have their food cut and portioned into smaller sizes.
