Lightload Towels were created by George "Wideload" (trail moniker) Wheeler who has been an avid long distance hiker for many years. In 1999 he completed the 2160 mile Appalachian Trail, then the year after he hiked 540 miles from Virginia to West Virginia on the A.T. all over again. It was an incredible experience repeated. It was in on his 99 Thru hike that he got the idea for Lightload Towels. Finally last year "Wideload" hiked the 270 mile Long Trail in Vermont from the Canadian border to the Mass-Vermont border. It's the oldest long distance hiking trail and was conceived on Stratton Mountain, Vermont the same place that the Appalachian Trail was given birth to some years later. This also was very magical and he hopes one day to redo the adventure. He has also spent about 8 years living in Asia, there he had the opportunity to lead hikes in Taiwan and do hikes in Nepal, Pakistan and China. He also has an interest in camping. He has spent time in many of America's national forests including the Ochoco (Oregon), Davy Crockett (Texas), San Francisco (New Mexico) and many others.
It's no surprise to me how and why Lightload Towels were created. They are perfect for all different situations from use as a normal towel on the go at the beach, neighborhood pool or water park with out having to bring a huge beach bag over flowing with over sized towels to a useful survival tool. These towels fit in your pocket, yes, you can go to the beach with your entire towel in your POCKET! Not sure about others, but as a mom of three children I am rather tired of having to bring a huge diaper bag or tote bag over flowing with random things we may or may not need. It would be so nice, stress-free and probably even relaxing if we were to go to the beach with just ourselves and no huge bag because we could have our towel in our pockets!
Lightload Beach Towels are made of wickable fabric making it a survival tool because it insulates against heat and cold. The material it is made of is 100% viscose which is made from cellulose. It is considered a natural fiber like cotton and linen (unlike microfiber). The pack that the towel comes in is a tight space and is ultralight weight at only 5oz. Our cat just had a litter of kittens and one of her kittens was 5oz at birth! Super light weight. It is also very compact, the pack is 3.5" in diameter and 11" in girth as well as 1/2" wide. The packaging is also waterproof. It is also said to be more absorbent then cotton and microfiber.
These beach towels are the only towels that are survival tools. You can use them as a towel, wash cloth, fire starter, first aid supplement, diaper, insulator, static electricity insulator, mask and so much more!
These towels are the most energy efficient towels in that they need little energy to carry, wash and dispose.
Add water to the towel or start wiping water off you to soften and open it easier. They're very soft against the skin. Hand washing your lightload towel is best and try to keep it dry when possible. The towels are reusable.
We have not yet used ours, we keep it in the van in case we ever need it in the event of an emergency. However, I did open it to see the size of our Lightload Beach Towel and it is a great size!

I learned they are reusable and can last up to a year and when done with them, just burn them.
